GRAPEVINE
(Continued from page 57)
Expedition. Members of the crew and the supplies needed were shown, but one item, interesting to barbell fans, was left out. Seven York Big 12 Special Barbell Sets were recently ordered by the Navy to go with the boys. Wouldn't it be odd if the next Mr. America came from Little America?
THE OLYMPIC GAMES have already cast their shadow before around the York Barbell Headquarters. People are rushing to and fro, looking up birth certificates, getting their palms read, and posing for passport snapshots. Bob Hoffman and Johnny Terpak will again shepherd the team (maybe there'll be a Sheppard on it, too!) as Official A. A. Ü. Coach and Trainer respectively. First they will fly to California, then to Hawaii and then on to Melbourne, Australia. The lifting will take place on November 26th and 27th, and they expect to be back about December 10th.
DAVE SHEPPARD and Frank SpellIman have been training hard at Muscle Beach for the final Olympic Tryouts, Oct. 27th, in San Jose. This letter from Dave gives you the picture ... "I understand the Eastern Olympic Tryouts were held Saturday, Oct. 6th. Would you send me the results as quickly as possible? Frank Spellman is in phenomenal condition. He has pressed 285 and had 290 moving! Pete George wrote that he did 265, 275, 360 in recent training. If you know any good news about the prospective members of the team, let me know. If I knew that Cylde Emrich was doing 1,050 total, I'd have more drive. Today I did 310 press five singles, snatched 290 five ditto, and cleaned and jerked 380. Yesterday I jerked 420 from the shoulders quite easily. Can squat three reps with 500."
Anyone could easily deduce from this note that Dave was a bit worried about Clyde, although Emrich made a disappointing total at Cleveland on Oct. 6th300, 270, 350 for a below par 920 total. Dave's rep training lifts add up to 310, 290, 380 for 980, so it looks from here like Sheppard is headed for Melbourne. Whether Frank Spellman will beat Pete George as handily is another story. Pete's training total of 900 is very good-and he may do even better at San Jose if his knee is in shape again.
WHAT'S NEW IN YORK? Two flashy new automobiles are now parked in front of 51 N. Broad Street. Steve Stanko has a new Olds Super-88 sedan, black and ivory, and Mike Dietz got tired of the trouble of parking his Caddy, and bought a 1957 Ford with fins clear back to here. Dick Bachtell, Nimrod No. 1 of the York Gang, has recently returned from a hunting foray into the mountains out Wyoming way, where he potted an antelope and a deer. He says that antelopes are so fast (70 miles an hour) that you have to shoot at them five minutes before you see them. John Grimek has his own private "Little Samson" Club, consisting of three junior grade youngsters who come around every couple of weeks and train at weight-tossing under the eye of the Master. It is amusing to watch these three little fellows sneak down the hall outside the office and peek in at the crack of the door to see if JCG is at his desk. "He's
in there!" one of them announces triumphantly, and they wait excitedly until John comes out and leads them into the gym. Who knows-perhaps one of these three will be the world champion of Tomorrow! Bob Hoffman and Johnny Terpak are girding their loins for flight into the Southern Hemisphere for the Olympics, and our two little gremlins, Chuck and Betcha are busy kissing all the girls on South Duke Street a fond goodbye. And none too soon. We are thinking of putting up a new sign over the door at 51 North Broad, "Through these portals pass the Strongest Men in the World and Harry Utterback." Harry is our traffic manager, and came here 20 years ago, and is the only man who ever worked at Number Fifty-one who has never touched a barbell except in anger. Funniest deal is that Harry, who weighs in at 148 pounds soaking wet, is the guy who always has to pack and help load our heaviest sets-the 400 pound Olympic bells! Whenever we hear Dick Bachtell holler up the "hole" from the shipping room for "Harry" we know another Olympic set is on the fire. Clarence Schell, son of an old York team member, is our most regular trainer, and wears the brightest garb for his workouts we have ever seen. If clothes make the man, he should soon become a world champion lifter. George Shandor is still stronger than a bull elephant, and burns Bachtell and Paschall up on training days by taking their top weights and doing 8 or 10 easy reps with them. The Big Contest will be over in a few days-Terpak, Bosco and Bachtell-Olympic lifts with a handicap for age and bodyweight and general decrepitude. We'll give you the horrible details next month. Jules Bacon will soon be busier than ever-they are putting a new roof on the Foundry. He is still "doubling in brass" between the Foundry in Marietta, the Iron Works in York, and the Thomasville Inn out on Route 30. In spite of all these interests, he is one of the most regular trainers in the York Gang, and stays in marvelous shape. And now-while we think of it and are in the mood-a Merry Christmas to all of you from all the Folks in York... and may you all enjoy a full measure of Strength and Health in 1957.
BEHIND THE SCENES (Continued from page 47)
you are seeking... the young man who was you?
Sometimes we wonder, when we hear the vicarious arguments of some of the York habitues, whether they are not afraid to be silent because then they would hear and see the ghosts. . . like small boys whistling when they walk past the graveyard. Because all of us, when we quit work to train a while, must sometimes see the shadowy figure of the young and vigorous fellow we once were, stalking to the platform and driving up huge weights so carelessly and confidently, secure in the knowledge that his physical power would be increasing always.
But this is too serious a thought to be bandied back and forth across barbell. Let us break the spell of reverie by wondering how our two small monsters are doing in Australia. . . at least we won't be listening to ghosts when they come marching back again. . . .
